There are many mosques in Istanbul. They are visited by a lot of tourists every day. As you may know there are some rules during the visit of a mosque. Before talking about the rules you should know that mosques are places where all the issues about life are left out of mind. Muslims only think about death and life after death during worship (namaz, pray). So you may now understand why there are rules and you should consider these while visiting a mosque:

- Take off your shoes at the etrance and put them in the shelf.
- Covering is important. The suitable clothes are long skirt and scarf for ladies, trousers (not shorts) for men.
- Don’t talk and laugh loudly.
- Never walk in front of a praying muslim.
- If it is namaz time (5 times a day), wait for the end of namaz before you enter.

Those are general rules. There may be some different rules according to the mosque. For example some of them don’t allow taking photographs, some of them only allow it without flash.

If you came to Istanbul on a budget airline you will most likely arrive to Sabiha Gokcen Airport located in the Asian Side. It’s not close to the city centre but there are a few ways to get to the centre of the city, Sultanahmet or Taksim etc.

How to get from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Sultanahmet or Taksim?

- Airport Bus: There’s airport bus provided by Havas taking you to Taksim Square. Price is reasonable. Duration is about an hour.

- Public Transport: Take the bus E10 to Kadikoy. It takes about 1 hour. Take the ferry from Kadikoy to Eminonu. Ferry ride is enjoyable. You don’t get bored. Sultanahmet is just 20 minutes walk from Eminonu. You can follow the tourists walking to Sultanahmet. In the daytime you can both find bus and ferry quite easily. To go to Taksim take the ferry to Karakoy. There you can find a lot of city buses going to Taksim area.

But if want to do it for paying less amount here’s the way how to get from Abdi Ipekci Arena to Sultanahmet by using public transport:

Walk about 500 meters from Abdi Ipekci Arena to Kazlicesme train station and get off at Cankurtaran stop. It’s just ten minutes walk to Sultanahmet. However, you should keep in your mind that there’s no public transport after midnight. So you can take a look at train schedules here and here. You should plan your outside activities considering the schedules.

If you are in Taksim square, take the metro from Taksim to Kabatas and you can get to Sultanahmet from Kabatas by tram. If you are at the other side of Istiklal take the little metro (calles as “tunel”). It takes you to Karakoy. You can take the tram from Karakoy to Zeytinburnu direction and get off when it arrives to Sultanahmet. These won’t take much time. However, there is an alternative way;

By taxi:

You can take a taxi, that will cost higher. It’s the best way to use public transport during commute hours as the traffic is very crowded at that time.

This year Ramadan will start in August. If you plan to travel Istanbul in Ramadan you may want to find out what you should do and not in this period. Here are a few things you should consider about this issue:

In Ramadan there are a lot of Turks fast. But there are also a lot, who don’t fast. Refraining from eating and drinking in public would be the best during the day time. However, it’s really related to where you are as Istanbul is a very big city. Considering that you will be around touristic places like Taksim, Beyoğlu, The Grand Bazaar, you will not even notice Ramadan has started as you will see a lot of people in the restaurants during the day time. Some of them are tourists, and the others are Turks. Most of cafes, tea houses will also be open. So this issue won’t be such a big problem for you.

In addition, there is one thing you should consider about: Having dinner around fast breaking time may be little problem as most restaurants will be very crowded and it will be hard to find seats.
